Our staff and tutors have all studied at Oxford and Cambridge Universities. We are here to support your academic development and pastoral needs during the course.
As a bespoke summer school focusing on quality, we have a small staff to student ratio of around 1 staff member for each 5 students. This ensures the highest possible support of our students and attention to detail which ensures they have an excellent time with us.
Sophie Frew, Summer School Leader
I’m a graduate of Jesus College, Oxford University, with a degree in Ancient and Modern History. This will be my second year running the Oxford & Cambridge Summer School and I can’t wait for July and August. It is such a great privilege to meet so many talented and dedicated students and be able to introduce them to the cities and universities of Oxford and Cambridge. Some of my favourite things about last year’s summer school were seeing all of the students debating in the Oxford Union, the trip to Cambridge, all the football and reading all the incredible reports. As you’ve probably seen from our video, we all had an amazing time.
I’m really looking forward to welcoming you all to Oxford. We’ve got an excellent programme of activities and Oxford is such a great place to be in the summer.
My main job during the summer school is ensuring the safety and well-being of all our students. I’ll be on call 24 hours a day and I will be very happy to help with any problems anybody has settling in, with academic work or anything at all during your stay. I will also be available in any emergencies.
Do
email me if you need to get in touch.
I also write the
Oxford & Cambridge Summer
School blog.

Oakley, Student and Parent Support
I studied Maths and Statistics at Mansfield College, Oxford
University. I’ve had lots of experience working in education and supporting
students, including volunteering as a Maths tutor for an educational charity
in Oxford. I've also helped support candidates applying to Oxford during the
times they came up for their interviews.
I’m excited to be working on the Oxford & Cambridge Summer School this year.
My role involves liaising with parents and students, and ensuring that
everything runs smoothly while they are with us. I look forward to welcoming
you to Oxford in July!
Jamie
Dear, Summer School Director
I've been lucky enough to have lived in Oxford for the past twenty years, having gone to school in the north of the city. I know what a fantastic environment and what a great place to study it is. We look forward to welcoming you here.
I studied Theology at Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford University. Since then, I've been involved with directing a number of educational organisations.
My experience and background is in supporting young people to fulfil their potential and to develop educationally, something we all believe in passionately here at the Oxford & Cambridge Summer School.
We set up the summer school to enable pupils to experience the very special experience of being a student in Oxford, to live in Oxford University accommodation and to learn from the Oxford tutorial style of learning.
I'll be working with Flo to oversee the summer school - and to make sure 2012 is a memorable and fruitful summer for you.
Barbara Shellard, Training Consultant
I graduated from St. Hilda's College Oxford University
in 1971, with a degree in English. I loved studying at Oxford for two
reasons. Firstly, its English course is first-rate, and recognised as such
throughout the academic world. Secondly, Oxford itself is a beautiful city
and a truly wonderful place to do a degree.
After Oxford I soon found that the best way to put my
love of literature into use was to teach it, which I accordingly began to do
in a girls' school in Berkhamsted in 1972. I knew almost from day one that I
had found my vocation.
I returned to St. Hilda's in 1990 to embark on a
Master's degree in Theology. My college found that they required someone to
take over teaching undergraduates New Testament Theology (my field of
expertise), and since I was a qualified teacher, I was the obvious person to
fill the niche. I taught for many colleges until I retired in 2010.
I always found the Oxford tutorial system an excellent
way to learn and teach. One-to-one and small group contact and discussion not only
facilitate a real exchange of ideas, but also allow an opportunity for
immediate in-depth feedback. It is Oxford's greatest strength.
As part of my tutorial responsibilities, I gained a lot
of experience of interviewing applicants to Oxford University. I joined the
team behind the Oxford & Cambridge Summer School in 2008 as their Training
Consultant, and in particular have helped to design and deliver the
Interview Preparation part of the course, which has been well very received
by pupils over the past number of years.
Oxford is a brilliant place to study, as I found out
forty years ago when I first arrived at Oxford University, and I’m delighted
to be part of the team that will be supporting you during your time with us.
